So, there can be a big swing in which specific muzzleloaders (and other vital pieces of gear like scopes, powder, and bullets) are legal to hunt with from year to year. 

This means that it's really easy for you to waste your valuable time and hard-earned cash buying something not tailored to your needs, that potentially won’t even work at all, or that may even be illegal to hunt with!

I know what it’s like to spend HOURS studying and researching hunting regulations and muzzleloader equipment options and STILL end up buying something that didn't deliver the performance I wanted because I didn't have access to quality resources to help me make the right decision in the first place.

There I was, a Soldier in the Army stationed in Georgia.
Georgia is a great state for hunters: there's no closed season on feral hogs, deer season is really long (October through January), and bag limits are very generous (2 bucks, 10 does, and unlimited hogs). 

My friend and I were stationed in Georgia together and we’d hunt hard for hogs most of the year. It gets really HOT there during the summer, so there usually weren’t many other hunters out in the woods chasing hogs with us. 

In addition to enjoying a fair bit of success on hogs, we found lots of great places to hunt deer in the process. 

Unfortunately, the woods would really quickly turn into a big pumpkin patch in the fall when the general deer season opened, which was really frustrating.

Well, we eventually decided that hunting with a muzzleloader was a great way to solve that problem.

One of the other cool things about Georgia is that muzzleloader season opens a week before rifle season. That gave us a full 7 days out in the woods to hunt deer before their changed their patterns in response to the big influx of hunters when rifle season opened.

So, we headed to a local sporting goods store and my friend bought a very basic inline muzzleloader along with some bullets, powder, and primers. 

We went shooting for a couple of hours that weekend to sight it in and get a feel for how to operate it. Things went really well at the range and he decided to take it hunting the next weekend when muzzleloader season opened.

I decided to go a slightly different route and bought a more traditional sidelock muzzleloader instead. I thought it would be really cool to shoot a couple of deer with a very traditional muzzleloader and I was pretty confident in my abilities to get that muzzleloader up and running in no time at all.

Oh my, was I humbled by the experience.

Unfortunately, my muzzleloader had a pretty steep learning curve and I struggled at first trying to figure things out on my own. It took several months of experimenting with different primers, powders, and bullets for me to find a load that ignited reliably and shot accurately.

My friend shot a doe with his new muzzleloader about 30 minutes after the season opened. He ended up shooting two more deer and a handful of feral hogs over the course of that season with his muzzleloader, so his muzzleloader hunting career got off to a great start.

I on the other hand got a shot at a small buck that morning, but wasn't able to close the deal. I dealt with a lot of set-backs and frustrations over the next few weeks as I struggled to figure things out with my muzzleloader. 

In fact, I strongly considered giving up and selling my muzzleloader a few times.

Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened...

I FINALLY discovered a load that reliably ignited and shot accurately out of that muzzleloader. My confidence skyrocketed and I ended up shooting a hog that weekend using my newly discovered pet load. 

Remember: my friend and I had NO experience with muzzleloaders at all at the time and we didn’t even know anybody who did. We couldn’t find anybody at any of the local gun stores who really knew what they were talking about and we had a really hard time finding any useful information online. 

As a result, I had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way.

Doing so WAS very satisfying though and that whole process did help me develop a good foundation of knowledge and learn the fundamentals of hunting with a muzzleloader.

That whole experience made the situation crystal clear to me:

Hunters trying to learn how to hunt with a muzzleloader suffer from a serious lack of reliable, trustworthy, and easy to understand sources of information. 

Once I realized this (and once I got a taste of success), I doubled down and I spent the next few years researching, experimenting, shooting, and hunting with various muzzleloaders. 

But I didn’t stop there.

I began documenting my journey in a series of articles in a small online hunting blog. It took a tremendous amount of work, but I eventually created a massive online resource on muzzleloader hunting that started getting a lot of attention from other hunters who were in the same boat I was in.
